「你知道車站在哪裡嗎？」很多人會直接說 Do you know where is the station?，聽起來好像沒問題，但這其實是台灣學習者最常犯的語序錯誤之一。正確的說法是 Do you know where the station is?。這種把問句放進另一個句子裡的結構，叫做間接問句。它在問路、詢問資訊、寫 email 和職場對話中都非常常用，而且能讓語氣變得更禮貌。這篇文章帶你從規則到實際應用，一次把間接問句學好。
直接問句與間接問句的差別
直接問句是我們最熟悉的形式，疑問詞後面接倒裝，也就是助動詞或 be 動詞放在主詞前面。間接問句則是把問題放進另一個句子裡，這時語序要改回一般的直述句順序：主詞在前，動詞在後。
- Where is the station? 車站在哪裡？（直接問句）
- Do you know where the station is? 你知道車站在哪裡嗎？（間接問句）
- What time does the store open? 這家店幾點開？（直接問句）
- Could you tell me what time the store opens? 可以告訴我這家店幾點開嗎？（間接問句）
注意第二組例子，直接問句中的助動詞 does 在間接問句裡消失了，動詞也回到正常的第三人稱單數形 opens。這是最多人忽略的地方。
規則一：有疑問詞的問句
當原本的問句有 what、where、when、why、who、how 等疑問詞時，間接問句的結構是「疑問詞加主詞加動詞」。
- Why is she upset? → I wonder why she is upset. 我在想她為什麼不開心。
- How much does it cost? → Can you tell me how much it costs? 可以告訴我這個多少錢嗎？
- When did they arrive? → I don’t know when they arrived. 我不知道他們什麼時候到的。
簡單來說，步驟就是：保留疑問詞，把倒裝的助動詞拿掉或移回主詞後面，再依照時態調整動詞。
規則二：沒有疑問詞的 Yes/No 問句
如果原本是用 Yes 或 No 回答的問句，例如 Is he coming?、Did you finish?，改成間接問句時要加上 if 或 whether，意思是「是否」。
- Is he coming? → Do you know if he is coming? 你知道他會不會來嗎？
- Did you finish the report? → I’d like to know whether you finished the report. 我想知道你是否完成報告了。
if 在口語中比較常用，whether 稍微正式一點，在寫作中也很常見。如果後面要加 or not，通常會搭配 whether，例如 I’m not sure whether or not we should go。
規則三：問號還是句號，看主要句子
間接問句本身不需要問號，句尾要用問號還是句號，取決於整個句子是不是在發問。
- Do you know where she lives? 主要句子 Do you know 是問句，所以用問號。
- I don’t know where she lives. 主要句子是直述句，所以用句號。
很多人寫 email 時會寫出 I want to know where is the meeting room? 這樣的句子，語序和標點都有問題，正確應該是 I want to know where the meeting room is.
為什麼間接問句比較禮貌
直接問句雖然清楚，但有時聽起來太直接，特別是對陌生人、客戶或上司。加上 Could you tell me、Do you know、I was wondering 這類開頭，就像中文說「不好意思，請問一下……」，語氣立刻柔和很多。
- Where is the restroom? 廁所在哪裡？（直接）
- Excuse me, could you tell me where the restroom is? 不好意思，可以告訴我廁所在哪裡嗎？（禮貌）
- I was wondering if you could help me with this. 不知道你能不能幫我處理這件事。（非常客氣）
最後一句 I was wondering if 是職場上請求幫忙時很好用的開頭，雖然用了過去式，但意思是現在的請求，過去式在這裡是讓語氣更委婉。
常見錯誤整理
- 保留倒裝語序，例如 Can you tell me where is the bank，應改為 where the bank is。
- 保留助動詞 do、does、did，例如 I don’t know what does he want，應改為 what he wants。
- Yes/No 問句忘記加 if，例如 Do you know is the shop open，應改為 if the shop is open。
- 間接問句中用 that 代替 if，例如 I’m not sure that he will come 是表達「我不確定他會來」，語意和 if 不同，想問「是否」時要用 if 或 whether。
練習方法
寫下十個你平常會問的直接問句，例如問路、問價格、問時間、問同事進度，然後把每一句改成以 Could you tell me、Do you know、I wonder 開頭的間接問句。改寫時大聲念出來，特別注意主詞和動詞的位置。熟練之後，也可以試著聽英文影集或訪談，留意說話者在禮貌詢問時怎麼使用間接問句，模仿他們的語調和節奏。
一開始速度慢沒關係，因為我們的腦袋已經習慣了倒裝的直接問句，需要一段時間重新建立語序習慣。只要多練幾次，Do you know where the station is? 這樣的句子就會自然脫口而出。
間接問句在職場 email 的應用
寫工作 email 時，間接問句幾乎是必備的工具。向客戶確認資訊時，與其寫 When will you send the payment?，不如寫 Could you let me know when you will send the payment?，語氣會專業很多。向主管請示時，可以寫 I’d like to check whether the meeting is still on for Friday，或是 Please advise how we should proceed。這些句子都把問題包在禮貌的開頭裡，讓對方覺得受到尊重。
另外，Let me know 也是非常好用的開頭，例如 Let me know if you have any questions，意思是「如果有任何問題請告訴我」，是 email 結尾的經典句型。把這些常用句記下來，寫 email 時就能直接套用，不必每次從頭思考語序。
常見問題
who 當主詞的問句是特例，例如 Who called you?，改成間接問句時語序不變，直接說 Do you know who called you? 即可，因為 who 本身就是主詞，後面直接接動詞，不需要調整。
